It has become the go-to method for commercial gree It has become the go-to method for commercial greenhouse tomato production. High-wire systems can produce an enormous amount of tomatoes in a relatively small space, but they also require a lot of labor-intensive maintenance to keep the plants healthy and productive.

Whether you are a grow operation choosing to have one maintenance team, or multiple teams focusing on specific tasks, it is important to perform these duties on time and in concert with each other. A lapse in one task can have a ripple effect on the others.

Swipe ๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿผ to learn how you can maintain the healthiest and most productive tomato plants.

Sometimes growers unknowingly follow practices tha Sometimes growers unknowingly follow practices that can contribute to, or directly cause, a reduction in crop quality. The following will lead you down the path toward high-quality crops:

1. Don't hold plants over. Cut your losses and dump plants that didn't sell. They easily become infested with pests - increasing potential for virus transmission.

2. Do clean the greenhouse. There is a strong correlation between the cleanliness of a greenhouse and the quality of the crop produced.

3. Do scout for insects. Use sticky cards (weekly) to monitor pest populations as a proactive, not reactive, way to control insect pests.

4. Don't ignore your ventilation system. The quality of many floriculture crops decrease as temperatures increase. Insufficient venting & poorly maintained exhaust fans allow temps to rise excessively in the spring & summer. Conversely, fan louvres & vents that do not close properly increase utility bills in the winter when warm air escapes outside.

5. Do Maintain HAF fans. Fans pointed downward or upward don't mix the air as intended, which can create uneven drying conditions.

6. Don't limit light levels during the winter. Avoid baskets above a crop until at least March; limit other overhead obstructions; use supplemental lighting from October through March; and invest in re-skinning poly greenhouses when they reach their intended lifetime.

7. Don't increase plant density. It is tempting, but leave enough space so each plant can harvest more light to increase branching and thicker stems.

8. Do transplant. If plugs and liners are easily removed from trays with the substrate intact - its time to transplant. If they remain in their tray longer than they should, substrate pH drifts, plants flower prematurely and plant vigor decreases.

9. Do keep the foliage dry. Water in the morning so foliage is dry by sunset to avoid spore germination & leaf penetration.

10. Do monitor the pH. Measure weekly with calibrated sensors. This enables corrective actions before symptoms become apparent.

Are there other practices you implement to produce high-quality crops?

Farmers wonder about the difference in growing met Farmers wonder about the difference in growing methods and if one cultivation technique leads to higher production. Growing crops rooted in soilless containers vs crops rooted in the soil seems to offer some significant advantages to farmers.

Soilless cultivation allows growers to choose the most appropriate substrate to maximize the production of their crop. Advantage: Soilless, Above Ground Cultivation.

Soilless cultivation requires a higher initial investment. Advantage: Soil, In-Ground Cultivation.

Soilless cultivation offers much higher yields the first year โ€“ often by as much as 50%. Advantage: Soilless, Above Ground Cultivation.

Soilless cultivation creates a higher rate density of plants. Advantage: Soilless, Above Ground Cultivation for the value of the plants; Advantage: Soil, In-Ground Cultivation for less overall initial costs.

But here is the real kicker. Early root development that occurs in a container with a specifically chosen substrate creates the most comfortable growing space for the plant so transplanting is stress-free. This technique ensures that the plant starts its growth in an optimal way. The roots develop much stronger and faster in a container which means when combined with higher planting density, the harvest is much more abundant in the early years. As time goes on, yields from in-ground cultivation will catch up once the plants reach their full development.

The hemp market is just too great to ignore, and a The hemp market is just too great to ignore, and as it continues to gain traction, it is slowly seeping into other industries. Hops and hemp are beginning to blend. It is no question hops and cannabis plants look very comparable, but as of 2002 biologist confirm they share specific molecular structures โ€“ meaning similarities beyond these two plants go far beyond its looks! While cannabis (hemp) production is much more regulated than hop production, the cultivation methods are quite similar.

Annette Wiles, owner of @midwesthopproducers in Nebraska, is taking advantage of her experience growing 32 acres of hops to transition to the journey growing hemp starts in their greenhouse and adding outdoor acreage to continue to expand their hemp business.

Growing one plant which can have three different types of crops (seed, fiber, oil). . . So much potential! Lead the way Annette ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป.

Who knew? Citrus trees really like to grow inside Who knew? Citrus trees really like to grow inside a greenhouse! More and more outdoor citrus growers are starting to shift to controlled environment citrus tree production. Turns out air pruning containers and a media mix of peat-perlite or coconut fiber is a recipe that both liners and citrus trees like.

The most important aspect of the shift to indoor production is keeping pests out of the greenhouse. HLB has transformed the citrus nursery business in the US. Precautions need to be taken to protect the multi-billion dollar citrus industry. For greenhouses, mesh aphid screens cover fans so there are no holes anywhere in the building and double-door entry systems will push air out so insects donโ€™t come in.

An indoor nursery is not like an outdoor nursery โ€“ the pots and irrigation and of course lighting isnโ€™t the same. A bit of the growing process might have to be reinvented, but eliminating the threat of deadly disease can pay off in big ways!

The spider plant has been a foliage staple since, The spider plant has been a foliage staple since, well, forever. They are so easy to propagate by plucking off a plantlet from the mother plant and rooting them in a liner or another pot. With five different varieties (Variegated, Reverse, Irish, Bonnie, and Hawaiian) this good old standby is a perfect addition to add to the production mix and take advantage of the increase in demand for tropicals.

Some timeline guidelines for production of spider plants:

4โ€ pot / 12-14 weeks grow time / 1 to 3 plants per pot

6โ€ pot / 16-18 weeks grow time / 3 to 6 plants per pot

6โ€ hanging basket / 20-22 weeks grow time / 6 plants per pot

8โ€ hanging basket / 22-24 weeks grow time / 6 to 8 plants per pot

Considered the โ€˜steakโ€™ of the mushroom world, Considered the โ€˜steakโ€™ of the mushroom world, oyster mushrooms are perfectly suited to this role in the protein transition. They are extremely versatile as alternatives for meat by processing them into ragout or add them to meat in a blended burger patty.

The mushroom sector, in general, faces challenges with the availability of raw material. The compost mushrooms grow on is a vital link in mushroomsโ€™ cultivation. Turns out coffee grounds might just provide a solution. Other raw materials are added, but there is a reasonably large surplus of coffee grounds making this an interesting option. GRO Mushroom seems to be leading the way with this โ€˜new substrateโ€™.

Huh. Sustainability indeed.

With conservative estimates that hemp can be used With conservative estimates that hemp can be used to make more than 25,000 products while producing virtually no trace of THC, it is a wonder why hemp production was ever banned throughout the United States in 1937. Guilt by association has never had such a painful consequence. We were soooooo skeptical. You no doubt will be as We were soooooo skeptical. You no doubt will be as well - but stick with us here.

It was back in September when we were enjoying our seat at @bejo_usa Virtual Open House. The tour was beautiful. It was an unexpected surprise when we were shown to their fabulous outdoor kitchen where they were preparing โ€œGrilled Carrot Hotsโ€œ. We were so busy admiring the stone pizza oven in the background we thought for sure we misunderstood what was being prepared. Nope, it was in fact โ€œGrilled Carrot Hotsโ€œ. They provided their recipe so we thought โ€œthis sounds just too strange not to try.โ€ YUM! You have to give it a tryโ€ฆ So simple:

BLANCH peeled carrots in salted water with cinnamon sticks and bay leaves for approx 8 minutes to fork tender

MARINADE in lime juice, orange juice, cumin, garlic, olive oil, salt/pepper for 24+ hours

GRILL/ROAST to tender

We followed their suggestion and topped with cilantro and feta cheese. O-M-G. It is a โ€˜dog-goneโ€™ hotdog! For real!

Have you caught sight of any carrots masquerading around?
